Schneersohn, Menachem

(1902-94)
   American Hasidic leader, of Russian origin. Born in Nikolayev, Russia, he went to the US as a young man. He married the daughter of the sixth Lubavitcher rebbe, and in 1950 became the seventh Lubavitcher rebbe. His headquarters on Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn served as a centre of pilgrimage. Many of his followers regarded him as the Messiah.
